Where a gietfloor makes sense, why waterproofing is invisible but essential, and how to avoid the mistakes that turn a bathroom into a renovation cycle.

The bathroom is the room where cheap decisions become expensive fastest. Water finds every gap, and by the time you see a problem the damage is usually already inside the wall.
A poured gietfloor is a strong candidate here because it is seamless. There are no grout joints to crack, no edges for water to sit in, and no texture for mould to grip. But the floor is only as good as the waterproofing beneath it.
Why gietfloor works in bathrooms
- Seamless surface with no grout lines to maintain or reseal.
- Can be sloped gently toward the drain during installation.
- Available in formulations with lower resin content and better environmental profiles than standard epoxy.
- Easy to clean with plain products, reducing the need for strong chemicals over time.
What to ask for when choosing a sustainable gietfloor
- The resin type — water-based polyurethane, bio-based, or cementitious systems generally have a lower footprint than solvent-heavy epoxies.
- VOC emissions data, ideally tested to a recognised indoor-air standard.
- A clear maintenance schedule: how often does it need refreshing, and what products are safe to use?
- Evidence that the installer will prepare a proper waterproof layer and control joints before pouring.
Ventilation is part of the finish
Even the best bathroom will fail if humidity is allowed to linger. Mechanical extraction, a window that can be opened, or both, are non-negotiable. A dry bathroom lasts longer than any coating can.
Fixtures also matter. Low-flow taps and showers reduce both water use and the energy needed to heat it. That is the kind of invisible saving that compounds over years.
