De Amsterdamse Meubelmaker: local furniture for small Amsterdam homes
Why furniture made in your own city lasts longer — and how one piece can be your office and your bed
Frogwise · 6 min leestijd
In short
- De Amsterdamse Meubelmaker is a furniture workshop in Amsterdam, run by maker Maarten since 2011. Everything is made by hand, to measure, in his own workshop on the Zuider IJdijk.
- He works with solid wood — oak, walnut, maple — and steel and brass. No chipboard furniture that falls apart after one move.
- Local making means short transport, a person you can talk to, furniture that can be repaired, and money that stays in the city.
- His strongest skill for city life: furniture made for small apartments — one piece that is an office by day and a bed at night, built exactly to your walls.
Who he is
De Amsterdamse Meubelmaker has been building custom furniture and interiors since 2011, "in Amsterdam, for Amsterdam". The workshop makes tables, cabinets, benches, beds, built-in wardrobes and room dividers, and fits out homes, shops, offices and cafés. Each piece starts with a conversation and a sketch, and ends with Maarten installing it himself.
The workshop is at Zuider IJdijk 36F, 1095 KN Amsterdam, and you can visit by appointment to see materials and work in progress.
Why local making matters
Short distances. Most flat-pack furniture is made far away, shipped across oceans and trucked across Europe. A piece built a few kilometres from your home travels by van, once.
Materials you can see. You choose the wood with the maker. You know what it is, where it comes from and how it is finished — no hidden glues, foils or particle board.
Built to be repaired. Solid wood can be sanded, re-oiled and re-joined. If something breaks in ten years, the person who made it is still around the corner.
It lasts generations. The most sustainable piece of furniture is the one you never replace. Cheap furniture that ends up on the street after two moves costs more over a lifetime — for you and for the planet.
It keeps a craft alive. Paying a local maker keeps skills, workshops and jobs in the city. That is worth paying for.
Good furniture, the way he makes it
- Solid materials: oak, walnut, maple, steel and brass, chosen per project.
- Timeless design: traditional joinery combined with clean, modern lines, so the piece still looks right in twenty years.
- Made by hand: every piece is built in the Amsterdam workshop with attention to detail.
- A clear process: first meeting, design and choice of materials, a transparent quote and planning, production, then delivery and installation.
Furniture for small apartments
Amsterdam homes are small, and many people work from home. A standard bed, a standard desk and a standard wardrobe simply do not fit. This is where made-to-measure furniture changes how a home works.
- Office and bed in one. A fold-down or lift-up bed with a desk or shelving built around it: a workspace by day, a bedroom at night, without moving your laptop.
- Built into the walls. Wardrobes and shelving made to the exact height of your ceiling and the odd angles of an old canal house, so no centimetre is wasted.
- Room dividers that store things. A cabinet that separates the sleeping corner from the living room and holds your books and clothes.
- Benches with storage. Seating that hides toys, blankets or work files.
One well-made piece that does two jobs replaces two cheap pieces — less material, less clutter, more room to live.
How to work with a local maker
- Measure your space and photograph it, including sockets, windows and radiators.
- Write down how you live: who sleeps where, when you work, what you need to store.
- Visit the workshop and look at real wood samples.
- Ask about finishes: natural oils and waxes are easier to repair than lacquer.
- Plan ahead: handmade work takes weeks, not days.
