Mattresses made of natural materials
Kapok, wool, latex — and the case against sleeping on plastic

You spend roughly a third of your life pressed against a mattress, breathing the air ten centimetres above it. A child spends more. That makes a mattress one of the few objects where material choice is not an aesthetic preference but an exposure question.
Almost every mattress on a European shop floor is polyurethane foam, sometimes with a viscoelastic ("memory") layer, wrapped in a polyester knit. It is cheap, light, and easy to ship compressed in a box. It is also plastic, and it behaves like plastic.
What the plastic actually does
It off-gasses. Flexible polyurethane foam releases volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds — residual isocyanates and amine catalysts, toluene, formaldehyde, and a long tail of aldehydes. Chamber studies of new foam mattresses consistently find measurable VOC emission that peaks in the first days and decays over weeks; emission rates rise with temperature, and body heat raises the surface of a mattress by several degrees. Emissions in the breathing zone of a sleeping child have been measured meaningfully above room background for exactly this reason.
It carries flame-retardant chemistry. Foam does not meet flammability rules on its own, so it is treated or wrapped in a barrier. Older brominated and organophosphate retardants migrate into house dust; several have been restricted precisely because they were found in dust and in blood. Wool passes the same tests without added chemistry, because of its keratin structure, high moisture content and nitrogen content — it chars rather than melting and self-extinguishes.
It sheds microplastic. Polyester covers and foam abraded by twenty thousand nights of movement produce fibre and particle dust. Bedroom dust is one of the most consistently microplastic-rich fractions measured in indoor environments.
It sleeps hot. Closed-cell and viscoelastic foams hold heat and hold moisture. An adult loses several hundred millilitres of water overnight; a material that cannot move it keeps you damp, which is both uncomfortable and the precondition for dust-mite populations.
It has no honest end of life. Glued composites of foam, polyester, steel and adhesive cannot be separated economically. The great majority of discarded mattresses in the EU are landfilled or incinerated. A wool-and-kapok mattress is a pile of compostable fibre and, at worst, a bag of clean wool for insulation.
What natural fibres do instead
Kapok
Kapok is the seed floss of Ceiba pentandra. Each fibre is a hollow tube — around 80% lumen by volume — coated in a natural wax. That geometry gives it an extraordinarily low density (roughly 0.3 g/cm³ against 1.5 for cotton), buoyancy, and a springiness that resists compression without any foam. It is harvested from pods without felling the tree, requires no irrigation or pesticide input, and is naturally resistant to moisture uptake because of the wax. For children it is light enough to lift, air out and turn one-handed.
Wool
Wool is the quiet technical marvel of the bedding world. It absorbs up to about a third of its own weight in moisture as vapour while still feeling dry to the touch, then releases it — the reason a wool duvet holds a stable microclimate across a temperature swing that would leave you sweating under polyester. It is hygroscopically buffered, naturally flame-resistant, and inhospitable to dust mites because it wicks the humidity they need. It is also fully biodegradable and, at end of life, a nitrogen-rich soil amendment.
Natural latex, horsehair, coir, organic cotton
Where you want more support than fibre alone gives, GOLS-certified natural latex over pocket springs is the durable option: it can be re-covered, it outlasts foam by years, and it is a tapped tree exudate rather than a distillate. Coconut coir and horsehair do similar structural work in firmer, more traditional builds.
What to ask any maker
- Full material declaration by weight — including the cover, the quilting thread and the glue. "Natural" on a label means nothing on its own.
- How flammability is met. If the answer is wool or a mechanical barrier, good. If they will not say, that is your answer.
- Adhesives. The best natural mattresses are tufted or stitched, not glued.
- Certification with a scope. GOTS covers organic textile processing; GOLS covers latex; OEKO-TEX Standard 100 caps residual substances. Read what the certificate actually covers — often it is one component, not the mattress.
- Repair and re-covering. A mattress you can open, re-card and re-fill is a thirty-year object.
- What happens at the end. Ask whether it can be composted or taken back.
Three makers worth knowing
Cocoon Company (Denmark) — kapok mattresses for cots, children and adults, plus kapok duvets and pillows. Unglued, unbleached, no foam anywhere in the range, and priced within reach of a normal family. The clearest single answer to "what do I put my child on".
Terschellinger (Netherlands) — wool duvets, mattress covers and toppers in washed European wool, in a tradition of wool bedding that predates the foam industry by centuries. A wool topper and a wool duvet over an existing bed is the cheapest meaningful upgrade to your sleep chemistry.
Home of Wool (Bulgaria) — hand-made wool mattresses, toppers, duvets and pillows, including bespoke sizes for cots, bunk beds, boat berths and awkward attic rooms. Everything is stitched rather than glued, and the fill can be re-carded years later.
Honest trade-offs
Natural mattresses cost more up front, weigh more, and need airing — kapok and wool should be turned and given sun periodically, and both compress somewhat in the first months, which is normal fibre settling rather than failure. Wool is not vegan. Latex is a rare but real allergen. None of this is hidden; it is simply the shape of a material that came from a field instead of a refinery.
If you buy once and keep it twenty years, the arithmetic favours the fibre.

- Is kapok safe for babies?
- Kapok is a plant seed fibre with no added chemistry. Buy it unbleached and undyed, air the mattress before first use as you would any bedding, and turn it regularly. Kapok is not a known allergen, though as with any fibre fill a tight-woven cotton cover reduces dust.
- Do wool mattresses attract moths or mites?
- Dust mites need humidity; wool moves moisture away, so populations tend to be lower than in foam. Moths are a real risk only with long storage — keep wool in use, aired and dry, and avoid sealing it in plastic.
- Are natural mattresses firm enough for adults with back pain?
- Fibre alone is softer. For adult support, pair a wool or kapok topper with pocket springs or GOLS-certified natural latex, which gives foam-like support without the petrochemistry.
- What about the smell of a new foam mattress?
- That smell is measurable VOC emission. If you already own foam, unwrap it in a ventilated room for at least a week, keep the bedroom cool, and put a wool topper and cotton cover between you and it.
