Finding clothes that make breastfeeding easier without making you look like a hospital visitor is harder than it should be. Most nursing tops fall into one of two camps: fast-fashion polyester with noisy zippers, or shapeless layers that announce "I am now a mother" before you do.

I found Latte Mamiato through a friend in Amsterdam who organised an event to bring awareness to breastfeeding mothers and the connection that can sometimes feel lonely in early parenthood. The initiative is called Voeden in Verbinding — they run gatherings and support spaces, and they collaborate with Latte Mamiato on the merchandise. That is how the t-shirt ended up on my radar.

I wish I discovered the t-shirt a few years earlier. It is smoother. It is now my favourite t-shirt to wear both because of the easy access to feed, the comfortable wide V-neck — most t-shirts are just tight on the neck, which is not that comfortable for women as for men, and impossible to breastfeed if you did not have the side entries, so I had to learn to avoid them. It is also more sexy with the V-neck. Also for men;)

What I look for

• No front zipper. Zippers are fast, but they break, catch hair, and usually feel cold against the skin. Side snaps or a lift-up panel are easier to operate one-handed.
• Coverage that stays put. A good nursing top should let you feed without hoiking a blanket over the baby or exposing the stomach you did not ask to expose.
• Natural fabric. A newborn lives on your chest. Cotton, linen or wool against their face matters more than stretch.
• Washable. Milk, spit-up and yoghurt are coming. Machine wash, low tumble, no special treatment.
• Looks like normal clothes. It should still be wearable after the last feed.

Latte Mamiato

Latte Mamiato is a small Belgian brand run by a mother-daughter team out of Antwerp. They make t-shirts, sweaters and extras for people who are breastfeeding.

Their opening mechanism is three snap buttons along each side seam. The panel lifts up; the front layer stays down. You can open it with one hand while the other supports the baby. When it is closed, the snaps sit flat and invisible.

Materials and ethics

The pieces are 100% organic cotton. The production is described as fair-wage and made in Europe. The packaging is minimal. The range is small by design: a few colours, a few cuts.

The only thing I would ask for next is a wider size range and a clearer published list of where exactly the fabric is milled.

In use

I have the t-shirt. It washes well and has kept its shape. The snaps have not loosened after repeated opening and closing. The cut is generous enough for a changing body without being tent-like. It is worth what it costs: organic cotton, European production and a small team are things worth paying for.

I wear it for direct nursing and simply for going out of the house. It passes as a normal t-shirt, which is the point.
